Venus Series

2018

Created of porcelain clay bodies and various exotic hardwoods, this collaborative body of work by Katherine Hanks and Stephanie Martin considers the female body through the lens of delicacy, strength, and resiliency. With allusion to the Paleolithic female figurine, Woman from Willendorf, the faceless sculptures suggest a strong connection to fertility, prompting a connection to the Venus as a "universal mother".
