One-Time Session:
Clay and Wheel-Throwing

This one-time class is open to ceramic students of all levels to introduce or further develop their throwing skills. This class is a one-on-one, private lesson, tailored to meet each student’s desires. Students can expect to throw between 2 and 4 unique handmade pieces and gain a firm understanding of the  fundamentals of the throwing process. Following the class, Katherine will then trim, fire, and glaze the work, which will be completed within a few weeks of the class period.

What’s Covered

Prior to the scheduled session, the instructor will design a course tailored to the needs of the student based on their prior experience or expressed desires. Upon arrival, the student’s wheel will be fully equipped with all necessary tools, water, towels, apron, and clay wedges. The course outlined below should be  considered a guideline for the class:

  • Introduction to the wheel and tools: speed, posture, clay, expectations

  • Centering the wedge of clay: coning, applying equal pressure

  • Opening the clay: establishing the base and walls of your piece

  • Pulling the walls: creating height

  • Shaping: using tools to create form

  • Finishing the Piece: finessing rim and lines, undercutting
